Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous players trying for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
