Gus Hansen had a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only participant to make it to the last poker table in three of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history competing against Daniel Negreanu. He won a big pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has earned many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the best enthusiasts anywhere in the world. While competing in web poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. Gus often participates in the 200/400 NL maximum buy-in of $40, 000. Gus more often than not buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very poorly. He waits patiently for a good hand and then pushes all in. I know Gus is an excellent poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is penniless, he has little or no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy-in.
Buying in for the minimum takes most of the ability out of deep stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be 1 of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy in for the full dollar value. I believe tv can skew our view of the real world sometimes. The best poker players anywhere in the world might just be guys you have never heard about. Gus can be found wagering on web poker on Full Tilt. He generally participates in big stakes omaha/8 and texas holdem. Gus has shown himself as a tournament player. Can he use his skills in cash rounds?
